I know I haven't updated my blog for awhile, and I don't really have anything profound to post. Things are going great here, nothing new. My kids are still cute, I'm getting huge but feel great, Mitch is BUSY at work. However, there have been a few thoughts that keep going through my mind that I feel like blogging about. My hope is that word will get out and hopefully the 5 of you who read my blog :) will pass it on to 5 people, who pass it on to 5 more people, etc. Not that any of you have ever done any of these things, I'm sure (ha ha, I've been guilty of some of these myself, so I shouldn't really talk... but I will anyway). So here is Cara's list of some basic social skills:
1. It's not polite to ask someone when they plan on having another child unless you are that person's a) immediate family, or b) bestest friend in the whole wide world. This is an intensely personal issue that I can't believe random neighbors or mere acquaintances feel is their business.
2. It's not polite to hint and make funny comments about why someone doesn't have more kids than they do. There are so many people who struggle with infertility that it simply is not a joking matter.
3. Do not ask if someone is pregnant. Ever. No matter what. No matter if you think it is obvious. Ha ha, once I asked someone if they were pregnant and they weren't. Trust me, it's better not to even ask. I will never make that mistake again.
4. On that note, don't comment about the size of a woman you know is pregnant. My sister had a woman in her ward who would always say, "Gosh, I can't believe you're not having twins!" Speaking from someone who gets pretty darn huge every time I get pregnant, pregnant women are very aware that they're "growing," "blossoming," or "blooming," so there's really no need for you to tell them.
5. Don't ask someone what their salary is. You would think this was common social sense, but oh no. I have had several people ask me straight up how much money I make or how much Mitch makes. It's so awkward! I don't even know how much money my parents make or my siblings. In fact, Mitch's salary is the only one I know about besides my own.
I think I will be done for now. Reading over these, I sound harsh and scolding. Picture me saying this with a smile on my face, in a somewhat joking manner. I don't get offended, like EVER, like even when a lady told me I led the music in church with my hand like a dead fish. You could tell me I was huge as a barge right now and I would just laugh. I've just had friends and family go through several experiences lately that have appalled me at the insensitivity of some people and I feel like getting my thoughts on this in writing. So let's get the word out.

Amen to that! I remember too after we sold our house people would ask what we actually sold it for or the price of the house we just bought. And it is awkward!
Very nice.
Awesome. Thanks so much for spreading the word!! I was asked TWICE in my old ward if I was pregnant. I was wearing the SAME sweater on both occations. Said sweater is now rotting in the city landfill.
ah yes, that was me who asked Courtney about how much she sold her house for...I guess since we are sisters I still followed your rules, but I also know those particular things are public record and I could super sleuth and find out anyway. All of your points, Cara, are not public record and good ideas to follow. And the dead fish comment cracks me up!
cara you are looking HUGE. sure it's not trips?
kidding.
wish i could say i've never made any of these mistakes but the worst of worst just happened to me a few months ago. i asked a friend's wife when she was due...nope not preg, she has a disease which makes her tiny body have a 9 month pregnant belly. of course i wanted to die a million deaths.
so sorry these things have happened with your friends and family. i feel like i can read between the lines on this one and hope all turns out for the best...soon!!
WORD! I too have done a few of these and will NEVER do them again. Nice to be reminded again every now and then. :)
You are so cute. I love your words of wisdom! I think most of the time people just don't think before they talk. I"m totally with you on the "how many kids are you going to have" I am pregnant with my 4th and people ask me ALL the time. I just say well we'll see how 4 is. I always wanted 4 so that will probably be good when really I should say it's none of your business huh? :)
I have had several people ask me to tell them how much weight I have gained during my pregnancies....What I hate is when people "announce" that they have decided to start trying to have another baby...You crack me up.
Hi cara, this is Avree's friend Katy. Yes, I blog stock you...I always think your posts are hilarious. So, I had to leave a comment that goes right along with what you were saying. When I was about 8 months pregnant, I was on the elevator at work and this guy told me I was so big I was probably going to break the elevator. Apparently I looked like I weighed 2400 lbs.
Love the post!
Ha! I LOVE these! Due to some medical issues I'm sure no one wants to hear about, I have been asked TWCIE if I was pregnant when I was not. On both occasions the offending person actually touched my belly! The one lady didn't seem to believe me when I told her it was not in fact a baby, and continued to rub it as I embarrassingly attempted to brush off her inquiries. This was the first time I had ever met her! After that I proceeded to drink a beer. I certainly hope she believed me then! =)
Well said...I have very similiar opinions to you on each of these items!! Oh, and you are not huge either :)
